It is possible in some situations that WTC's automatic setup routine cannot detect the presence of a modem. If this is the case, the port number box is empty when the serial port scan is complete, no suggested configuration string.

If you know there is an internal modem in your computer, or an external one connected to it, you can type the port number into the port number box yourself when it is displayed blank. An internal modem is configured by its own associated software to be available via one of your computer's serial ports, which you can determine in Windows Control Panel. When an internal modem is fitted in your computer, Windows may recognise it and allow you to set it up without running any specific software provided with the modem itself. An external modem is physically connected to one of your computer's serial ports on its rear panel. The vast majority of modems used today are internal modems.

Note that you should only type the port number into the box, not "COM". For example, "3" if you have an internal modem and Control Panel shows it to be configure on COM3 (do not enter the quotes).

If you need to specify the modem port manually, it is advisable to test it before proceeding with further setup. To proceed with setting up WTC for text-to-text calls, direct access to the modem is required in any case to verify settings commands.

After typing in the modem port, press  ENTER to save it. We suggest that if you are not already using the interactive terminal configuration of WTC, you close the program down by pressing Alt+F4 and run the terminal version from the WintextCom program group created under Programs on your start menu by the Installation Wizard.

In the interactive terminal, type "AT" and press ENTER. If the modem is accessible on the port specified, it should respond "OK" and you are ready to proceed with the setup. If you cannot get a response, you need to use your system documentation to look further into where the modem is and how to get it working.
