The interactive terminal configuration of WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm) is provided as part of the installation as a convenience if you need to set up a modem or other serial communications situation where testing of the remote responses by direct keyboard input is necessary. In such circumstances, you would first need to configure WintextCom for this purpose, since the default communications operation is geared to selecting directory information and communications actions rather than typing commands directly. This option provides a ready-to-use interactive terminal so that you can concentrate on the task in hand without having to change settings in your regular version of WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm).
When attempting to establish modem settings, you need to access the modem directly when it is in "command mode" (or offline, not connected to a telephone call). Ordinarily, you only type directly to the modem when it is connected to a 'phonecall (online, your typed characters are sent over the 'phone), since commands to dial, answer a call, etc., are sent to it automatically by the WintextCom software.
The Installation Wizard places an icon to start WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm) in the program group created on your start menu. This icon differs from the icons created on the desktop and quick launch bar in that it starts WintextCom as an interactive terminal, as indicated in the title bar when the program runs. With this setup, WintextCom sends every character you type out through the serial port regardless of connection status considerations, and likewise, every character received from the serial port is displayed in the communications window. This configuration also enables verification of automatically generated commands such as for automatic dialling.
