As well as preventing wider access to Windows, the VB emulator blocks processing of the vast majority of WTC commands. In particular, the communications system is based upon a "command interpreter" and does not allow access to the WTC auto-dialling directory. Currently, the command interpreter provides commands to dial a telephone number and answer an incoming call, but does not support storage commands enabling numbers to be stored and dialled on a name basis. You can activate standard directory usage if preferred.
By default, the VB emulator available command set is as follows --
- Braille display advance: Press the Cursor Down Arrow or Tab to move the display forwards through text. This is the same as pressing the Advance Pad on the VersaBraille, and users of JAWS or a Freedom Scientific Braille display can use the Braille pan right key on their Braille unit.
- Braille display back: Press the Cursor Up Arrow or Shift+Tab to move the display backwards through text. This is the same as pressing the Left Pad on the VersaBraille, and users of JAWS or a Freedom Scientific Braille display can use the Braille pan left key on their Braille unit.
- Braille display to beginning: Press the Cursor Left Arrow or Control+Home to position the display at the beginning of the text.
- Braille display to end: Press the Cursor Right Arrow or Control+End to position the display at the end of the text, showing the Braille cursor.
- Clear text: Press Control+N to reset the text to the "Ready" prompt in both the Braille display and main window screen areas. This command begins a new communications file and is equivalent to clearing RAM on the VersaBraille. You may need to execute this command if you accumulate the maximum number of characters in the communications file (RAM), 32 kilobytes.
- Answerphone on/off: Press Alt+Escape to turn the answerphone on or off. A message box appears confirming whether it is on or off, press ENTER to get back to communications mode. When the answerphone is enabled, incoming telephone calls are automatically answered and the caller is sent a message inviting them to type in text to be read later. See the Text Answerphonesection in online help for more information.
- Local echo on/off: Press Alt+X to toggle whether WTC displays characters on the screen as you type them. If the modem or computer at the other end of the 'phone is echoing characters back as they are sent to it, WTC does not need to display them as you type. Press Alt+X if you find that characters you type are not being displayed or are appearing twice. Whenever the connection status changes, WTC attempts to determine the required local echo setting, but this command is available because it is possible for an error to occur with the automatic setting. This command is equivalent to changing duplex on the VersaBraille.
- Hang up call: Press ESC to hang up on a telephone call. A brief message is displayed, then the communications display is restored with the modem in the offline state.
- One-to-one communications: Press Alt+Y to enable keyboard-to-Braille communications as opposed to using the telephone. This mode enables the Braille user to read and follow what someone is typing on the computer keyboard. Press Alt+Y again to switch back to typing commands to the modem.
If you have enabled access to the directory, the insert, modify, and delete entry commands are available, Control+I, Control+M, and Delete key, respectively. The directory is opened by pressing the Context Menu key. Press ESC to close the directory back to communications mode.
