In VersaBraille emulation mode, as installed with the default "vb_mode_on_reg" options, WTC starts up displaying an introductory message:
"Telephone ready ...".
This message is customisable. It is displayed simply to indicate to the user that the system has started and is ready to go. The message disappears and is replaced by the Braille communications line as soon as a key is pressed or text comes in from the modem.
The first thing you will notice is that practically nothing works: the mouse, the Windows keys, the context menu key (and Shift+F10), the Alt keys and Alt combinations, application accelerators such as shortcut keys for desktop icons, are all ineffective; Windows key combinations such as WindowsKey+M to minimise the system also do not work, and only a select few of WTC's own internal command accelerators are available. In particular, Alt+F4 does not work. To shut WTC down, press Control+Alt+DEL or Control+Shift+ESC to start Windows Task Manager, then tab to the End Task button and press the space bar to activate it (the mouse is disabled). The above procedure will terminate WTC and you can then close Task Manger, Windows is restored to its normal operation - mouse, Windows keys, etc., perform their standard operations. Once you have shut down WTC, you can switch the VB emulator off so that WTC starts in standard mode by selecting the "vb_mode_off.reg" file in the Utilities folder.
