You can set up WTC's Braille keyboard support to allow you to use the standard 6-dot keyboard only or the extra dots 7 and 8 that are available on computer Braille displays and keyboards. Dot 7 is located to the left of dot 3 and can be used in combination with other dots to produce a shifted character. Dot 8 is located to the right of dot 6 and can be used in combination with dot 7 and other dots to produce a control character. Dots 8 and 7 alone can also be used to simulate the ENTER and Backspace keys, respectively.

The keyboard is configured for 8-dot Braille by default, which can be set explicitly with the "8" option symbol in the driver configuration string. Use the option symbol "6" to set 6-dot only mode.

Setting 6-dot mode applies to Braille display output as well as Braille keyboard input. Presses of dots 7 and 8 in combination with other dots are ignored. Dots 7 and 8 are, however, still available for use in chord commands with the space bar or if set individually to perform editing functions when pressed alone.

When you have set 6-dot mode with the "6" option, you can separately enable the use of dots 7/8. This is especially useful if you only intended to configure Braille display output, you can reenable dots 7 ad 8 to provide an 8-dot Braille keyboard in conjunction with a 6-dot display. Conversely, keyboard dots 7 and 8 can be separately disabled, resulting if required in a 6-dot Braille keyboard with all 8 dots shown on the Braille display. These options are described in the ensuing sections under this heading. By default, or if you explicitly set 8-dot mode with the "8" option, use of dots 7 and 8 is fully enabled.
