Use the opti9n symbol "6" or "8" in the driver configuration string, respectively, to cause WTC to produce 6- or 8-dot Braille output on the connected Braille unit. This is a global setting that applies to all Braille display drivers. The default is 8-dot electronic Braille, in which dot 7 indicates a shifted character and dots 7 and 8 together indicate a control character.

During use, you can press the left and right Shift keys together to toggle between 6- and 8-dot Braille output. The new setting is retained until it is changed again or WTC is restarted. If you are using a Braille text input keyboard, you can also use chord dots567 for this function.

You can toggle this setting temporarily by pressing the left and right Control keys together, or chord dots56. The original setting takes effect again as soon as the display contents are refreshed. This command can be useful if you do not like the extra bottom dots for general use and work with the 6-dot configuration; you can display the current text in 8-dot Braille from time to time to check whether a letter is capital.
