The WintextCom configuration string is displayed in the setup dialogue after selecting

"M? Modem port and initialisation"

on the Communications Mode settings menu, if a data modem is located in or connected to your computer.

WintextCom configuration strings are composed of "setup directives", which are sequences of one or more characters that determine individual settings. A configuration string may consist of only one setup directive, or several separated by white space.

The number at the beginning of the configuration string above is the communications (serial) port number on which WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm) can establish a modem connection, and hence a connection to the telephone. Your computer's serial ports are called "COM1", "COM2", etc. In the example above, WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm) has identified the modem on COM3, but only the number is specified in a serial port directive, not the "COM".

The "+<C>" after the port number configures WTC for text-to-text telephone calls and to run in Hide Mode, which is the preferred operating mode for general use. The text answerphone is not enabled, you can turn it on and off with Control+Shift+A from the software user interface. If you want the answerphone to be automatically turned on when the program starts up, insert an exclamation mark before the closing angle bracket:

"+<C!>".

In order to work reliably for text-to-text calls, you need to ensure that the modem is properly configured as well as WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm), otherwise you will experience a high incidence of calls not getting through, or even be unable to connect altogether. Configuring the modem is the purpose of the "pm:" setup directive following the closing angle bracket in the above configuration string, and is        discussed in the next section of this documentation.
