Below are some suggested additional settings that might suit personal preference. They are illustrated by example. The settings can be appended to the configuration string in the port number box of the automatic setup dialogue, each being separated from the previous by a space. If the configuration string gets too long, you can access the settings file directly at a later stage.
- To set the interval between transmitted characters when automatically sending commands to the modem (the inter-character delay) to 50 milliseconds instead of the default 150: p,,,,,,,,,50 - This applies to dialling 'phone numbers, answering the 'phone and sending the modem initialisation string. 150 milliseconds might be much greater than is necessary, which could be as low as 10 for fastest operation; however, too great a value is better than too small for slow modems, since sending commands too fast can cause errors and the software to exhibit unexpected behaviour. Experiment with this setting if you wish when the system is fully working.
- On Windows 95/98/ME systems, if you find the Braille updates sluggishly when going into Communications Mode: b-900 - This setting will not interfere with the Braille display length specification, which is a positive number.
- On Windows NT and later systems, if you find the Braille updates sluggishly when going into Communications Mode: b-0
- To suppress the "Ready" prompt initially at the beginning of the Braille display line: b,-
- To change the "Ready" prompt to "Communications": b,+Communications - Settings relating to the Braille line prompt are not acknowledged until WintextCom has been shut down and restarted.
- To set the Braille display to skip to the beginning of a new outgoing call without showing any preceding text in the communications file: p,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,527 - This setting can be convenient, it ensures that when you make a call, the Braille display starts showing the text of the call as soon as the progress window closes, without any extraneous display of preceding text such as the "Ready" prompt. It used to be the default setting, but on some systems it seems to cause WintextCom to crash when starting a call. Try this setting yourself when up and running if you would like to eliminate as much connection information as possible when making a call.
- Quick Braille Mode: bq20 - Causes the Braille display to advance automatically at the start of an outgoing call, following the end of the text and formatting to the specified length instead of the usual display length. Automatic advancing stops as soon as you press a key. Can be useful for automatically skimming passed banner information at the beginning of calls.
- To activate the editing window in Communications Mode after specifying a Braille length: e
In case you are wondering why WintextCom settings format is so arcane, it is because every setting in the settings file can be specified directly on the command line, such as in shortcut target fields or by other software starting WintextCom, so the syntax is as brief as possible at the expense of clarity.
