The global Braille settings set options that are used by both the Braille display output and Braille keyboard input features of WTC.

The first character ("D") of the string  value setting of the "brl_support" key installed by the Braille support file specifies the driver configuration string, and the second ("+") enables it.

The next two characters, "b6", enable use of the British computer Braille translator and just the standard 6 Braille dots. The default WTC Braille settings use the US computer Braille table and enable dots 7 and 8 in addition to the 6 standard dots. The Braille rendered by the British translator bears a greater similarity to standard English Braille and may be preferred in purely reading and communications situations. 6-dot Braille is found to be easier to read by many people and was the only  option supported by the VersaBraille. Deleting "b" results in the US translator setting, while deleting "6" produces 8-dot Braille.

The next character, "2", enables backspacing using dot 7 (little finger on left hand). Enabling this functionality is independent of the 6/8-dot Braille mode setting.

The next character, "5", enables sending Carriage Return (ENTER) with dot 8 (little finger on right hand). Enabling this functionality is independent of the 6/8-dot Braille mode setting.
