You can toggle the Braille translator on and of during use of WintextCom from the Braille menu in Communications Mode. Select the

"G: Use Braille grade I/II translator"

option, or press its menu hotkey, "G". If this menu item is checked, Braille translation is enabled according to the settings specified by the relevant WintextCom setup directive, otherwise, it is not used. Selecting the option switches between checked and unchecked.

You can also toggle translation on and of while reading by pressing Control+Alt+B. This is especially useful if you prefer to read in contracted Braille but want to quickly check the computer Braille form.

Note that the translator can only be toggled on and off interactively. Its specific properties must be set/changed wit WintextCom setup directives. Use "bC" to specify the translator for communications, which includes telephone communications and reading SMS text messages. Use "bR" to specify the default Braille reader translation settings. The 'C' and 'R' in the above directives must be uppercase (case sensitive). These Braille configuration directives should be used in the settings file rather than on the command line; command line use may appear to work but result in malfunction at a later stage.

WintextCom offers 16 translation tables that may be specified by sequences of up to 4 plus and minus signs, or a colon in the first position to specify American rather than standard English Braille. The effect of each plus or minus sign depends on its position in the configuration string, as follows:

1st character --

2nd character --

3rd character --

4th character --

In addition, you can specify a custom translation by placing a colon (':') in the 3rd position and following this by a filename or list of comma-separated filenames in the "liblouisxml" subfolder of the WintextCom installation folder. You can also specify translation files in another location by including the full path. If there is more that one filename specified in a comma-separated list, subsequent files assume the path specified with the first filename. Translation must be enabled with '+'' in the first position, and '+' in the second enables contractions, '-' turns contracted Braille off.
