WintextCom Personal Information Manager(tm) can provide Braille output to certain electronic refreshable Braille displays. Currently, the software only supports the Freedom Scientific range, Focus and PacMate displays, but support for Braille hardware from other manufacturers will be available in a future release. The feature is currently only applicable to Braille communications mode, where it enables WTC to be used as a text telephone under Windows without having to purchase an expensive screen reader for wider uses which are not required. Later versions of WTC will provide greater use of Braille displays without necessity for additional software. Use of the directory will soon be possible to enable text telephone users to select numbers as well as type them in, as well as use the text reader and e-mail facilities of the software when they become available. The ultimate objective is that all of WTC's features will be accessible to most types of Braille display without a screen reader, as well as certain features of other programs to provide a stand-alone package that enables Braille users to use the computer for the most common purposes, often the only ones required, in a simple and focussed environment.
