Typing Mode is a configuration of Communications Mode in which there is no remote or modem connection, or there is such a connection but it is only enabled for receiving unless a telephone call is in progress.

This setup can be used for "keyboard interpreting", where a person types on the computer keyboard and another person reads what they are typing on the screen or their Braille display. Windows Text Communications is ideal for use in this context, enabling a typist to communicate directly with a deaf or deafblind person via the keyboard or relay what others are saying so that the reader can participate in a meeting or similar situation.

Typing Mode is indicated by those very words at the begging of the status line. If a serial connection is also active, this is indicated by an asterisk ("*") prefixed to the word "Typing". If the serial connection is with a modem, it is possible to use the directory to dial out to make a 'phonecall, or answer an incoming call. Once a call is connected, WTC goes into Terminal Mode for you to conduct the call text-to-text. For a person using WTC as a PC textphone, the Typing Mode configuration offers a big bonus: it means that the computer is always ready to make or take a call, but it is equally possible to use it at any time for direct communications using the keyboard, without having to change any settings.

Typing Mode is the default configuration for Communications Mode. If you want to talk to a modem in command mode, such as for setup purposes, or to another computer where a call status is not supported, enable Interactive Offline Communications Mode.
