A directory list is a list of directory entries displayed in the directory window area of the program screen. As shipped, WTC displays its default directory list on startup.

You can edit a list by modifying existing entries, adding new entries at any location and deleting entries, and you can have as many separate lists as you wish. You can also copy and move entries within a list and between lists. The inboard directory editing  features allow you to work with individual lines in the list, which can be command lines or just text.

If you wish to edit the list in blocks of lines, or make comprehensive changes more conveniently than the built-in facilities afford,  you can load the list into your Windows editor (Notepad unless you have changed it) by pressing Control+Shift+ENTER when the list is displayed in WTC. When you have finished editing with an external editor, close and save changes and you are returned to the (updated) list in WTC. When you make changes in WTC itself, however, they are saved to disk immediately, there is no explicit save command.

The aggregate of your directory lists constitutes the directory. WTC displays the directory (a directory list) in a standard Windows list box. This allows you to navigate up and down through the entries, moving the highlight from one to another, with the cursor Up and Down Arrows, and to use the page keys to perform bigger jumps and the Home and End keys to move to the top and bottom, respectively. In addition, directory lists can be divided into paragraphs, which you can navigate with the Tab and Shift+Tab keystrokes, and paragraphs can be divided into subheadings.

All of the directory movement commands are available on the directory navigate menu, and you can find a complete list with brief descriptions in this documentation.

You can also highlight a directory entry by speed searching for text. When you type text while the directory is displayed, WintextCom searches for an entry that contains the text entered so far at any time as you enter it. If a match is not found from the current highlight position to the end of the list, the search continues from the top of the list to where it started (it wraps round). If the text is found, the entry containing it is highlighted. If the text is not found, the position of the highlight does not change. To begin a new text search string rather than carry on adding characters to the current one, tap a Control key or press Home to move the highlight to the top of the list. The search string is also cleared whenever the directory is reopened or a new list displayed, or you switch from WTC to another application and come back again.

When a command entry as opposed to a simple line of text (not containing a colon) is highlighted, pressing the ENTER key will execute it (or select it). This might be dialling a telephone number, opening a new e-mail message for sending, or opening a word processor document or web site. There is no limit to the kind of operations that can be performed with directory command lines, including some extra capabilities specific to WTC. You can select a directory command without it being highlighted by left clicking on any character in the line.

If a command line is highlighted, press Control+ENTER to paste its information field into the underlying application window. For example, if you are writing a document in your word processor and you invoke the WTC directory and highlight a telephone number entry, pressing Control+ENTER will paste the 'phone number into your document at the cursor position as if you had typed it. This capability is also very useful when you are filling in Internet forms, enabling you to have all your log in information and other relevant data in a directory paragraph to just fill in the form fields as you go. You can double click an information line with the left mouse button to paste the information without highlighting the line. This command has no effect on a line entry with no information field, but there is a long list of commands on the directory send menu for pasting different portions of directory text. You can also print parts of your directory instead of paste, and perform other operations. With proper use of the directory for storing contact information in paragraphs, you can easily retrieve many details, including full postal address or just post code, e-mail address(es), fax number(s), etc., all under one heading.

For textphone uses, any directory text that can be pasted or printed can also be sent out automatically over th 'phone. This means in particular that a telephone number stored in the directory can be used in two ways:

  1. You can select it to dial out in order to make a telephone call.
  2. When already in a call, you can select a number to send it to the person at the other end of the line as information.

With proper use of the directory for storing contact information, you can easily give out many details over the 'phon, including full postal address or just post code, e-mail address, fax number, etc., all under one heading.
