When you open a file in the library, it comes up on the Braille display just like text in a text-to-text telephone call or similar situation. You can read forwards and backwards through the file with the Braille display advance and back keys, or with the keyboard Down Arrow or Tab for advance and Up Arrow or Shift+Tab for back, if the Braille keys are not supported. The Braille keys are supported if you are using WintextCom with the JAWS for Windows scree reader or a supported Braille display.

Press the Left Arrow if you want to go back to the beginning of the file, or the Right Arrow if you want to jump to the end.

You can set bookmarks so as to be able to return to specific locations. Press Control+F2 if you want to mark the current position; to come back to that position in the future, press F2. If you have marked more than one position, pressing F2 cycles through them. You can mark up to 5 positions, after which adding a new bookmark replaces the oldest one currently set. When you close the file and save your current reading position, these bookmarks are also saved and will be available next time you read the file.

To close the file and save your current reading position, press Escape. The reading position is saved as an automatic bookmark, and the display is positioned at that location the next time you open the file. All other bookmarks are also saved. If you want to close the file without saving your position, press ENTER, other bookmarks will also not be saved. When you close a file in the WintextCom Reader, you are returned to another file if more than one was open, or normally to the directory. The library closes when you open a file by pressing ENTER, but if you opened it from File Manager, File Manager is reopened at the filename.

When you are stopping reading a file and want to bookmark your position, and in other situations, you might want to precisely position the display, for example, at the beginning of a chapter. Pressing Control+Right Arrow will move the display to the start of the next word after the one that is currently at the beginning, and pressing Control+Left Arrow will move it to the previous word. You can also hold the Control key down and left click anywhere in the word that you want at the beginning of the display. Use the cursor routing buttons on your Braille display to perform a left click, press one corresponding to any character in a word whilst holding down the Control key to locate that word at the beginning of the display.

While reading a file, the status line underneath the Braille line shows the percentage of the file read so far. The total number of characters in the file and the filename are also show. If the file is in the library, it will be shown as just a filename or path relative to the library, otherwise, the full path is shown. A ".txt" extension is not displayed. Filenames are shown in all lowercase, but if th file has no extension at all, it is shown in uppercase to distinguish it from a file with a ".txt" extension.

More advanced bookmarking is discussed elsewhere in this documentation. Searching for text is currently not supported, but the feature will be available soon, together with additional commands for skimming through text, such as by line and paragraph and in larger jumps.
