In order to be able to send SMS text messages from the WintextCom directory, you need a GSM modem or compatible mobile 'phone connected to your computer through a serial port, or with a USB-to-serial adaptor. When using a mobile 'phone connected to your computer for this purpose, you should ensure that your mobile 'phone provider does not have any contractual objections to this use of their service.
To send an SMS text message, select a telephone number entry in the directory and press F9 instead of ENTER. Currently, implementation of texting is at a very early stage and relies upon direct communication with the GSM modem or mobile 'phone. When you press F9, you are taken into Communications Mode and can type your message directly, no more than 153 characters. Press Control+Z to send the message when complete. The modem will respond with a line of text followed by a message number if successful. You will get an error if you type too many characters.
