WTC directory command lines provide the same sort of functionality as Windows desktop and start menu shortcuts, but offer more versatility and simpler organisation.

The basic format is:

"<display name>, <type>:<command>".

You can use the inboard directory editing options to enter, modify and delete directory items, or you can edit the actual text file stored on disk, which is plain text. Each directory list that you have available in the directory ring or accessed via a directory submenu item is loaded from permanent storage in your computer's file system. This file is updated automatically whenever you add, delete or modify an entry with the inboard tools (the store item dialogue and copy/move features).

The basic format is exactly the same as that for storing a telephone number, e-mail address or web page address. They are simply the "command" part of the entry, as entered in the information field of the store item dialogue.

The type field is optional, and by default is set by WTC according to what the command appears to be.

For example, the entry

"Test, file: notepad"

opens the Windows editor, "notepad.exe", when selected. Using the sore item dialogue, you would enter "test" in the name field, "notepad" in the information field, and click the insert or add button without filling in th tpe field. WTC describes this entry as of type "file", because it is not recognisable as a 'phone nuber, e-mail address or URL. But if you do fill in the type fieldk your description is used instead, and the functionality of the entry is completely unacected. The entry

"Test: notepad",

with no type description at all is totally valid, and can be acehieved with the store item dialogue by filling in the type field wit a colon only.

However, there are some special format for command linesl
