This facility is provided to enable you to include special characters in strings defined for transmission to the modem or other serial device, such as the tilde (ordinarily used to generate a half second pause in transmission) or a non-printable character. You could also use it to transmit a carriage return instead of using a double exclamation mark.

To send any character, simply enclose its decimal ASCII value in angle brackets. The string, including the opening and closing angle brackets, is replaced by the character equivalent of the number in the brackets. If the string enclosed in the brackets is not a number, ASCII 0 will be transmitted.

The use of the angle brackets in this feature means that the opening angle bracket itself must be transmitted in this way, but it can be specified literally so long as there is no closing angle bracket later in the string. The closing angle bracket can be included anywhere in a transmission string in its own rights.
