To send a text message, highlight the required telephone number in the directory and press F9. You can use the same number entry for both 'phonecalls and texts - press ENTER to dial the number, press F9 to send a text.
When you press F9, a box will come up for you to type the text. The display shows that you are sending a text to the number you selected, then it prompts "Message:", and then the cursor. Type in your text then press Control+ENTER or Alt+S to send it. You can move the cursor around to edit the text, just like composing an e-mail message in your e-mail program.
Text messages cannot be more than 160 characters long, or about 30 words. If you write more than this, WintextCom will split the message up and send separate shorter messages until it has sent everything that you typed, so you do not have to be concerned with making sure you do not type too much. However, it is not good practice to send very long text messages because there is a limit to how many texts a mobile device can store at any one time and your message may not be received properly if it is too long. No more than a few hundred words at the very most, people usually keep texts much shorter than this.
When you press Control+ENTER or Alt+S to send your text, the display shows "Sending SMS text:" for a few seconds, followed by some progress information, then goes back to the directory if the message is sent successfully. If an error occurs, a message will be displayed indicating a problem, some of the message may still have been sent. Problems sending SMS texts can arise for various reasons, such as bad weather causing low signal strength, but should not happen often. The progress information shows the part number of the text being sent. If the message is not greater than 160 characters long, there will only be 1 part, otherwise, the message is sent in multiple parts as described above, and the number of each part is displayed as it is sent.
When typing in the message, you can include information from the directory, such as a telephone number or address. To do this:
Currently, WintextCom does not automatically store copies of sent messages. If you need to keep a copy of the text as a record of what was said, you can save it in the library before sending it:
