If you are given a telephone number or e-mail address, or similar single item of information over the 'phone, you will most likely want to store it in the WintextCom directory along with other contact details. Even if it is not destined for the directory, you can store it there temporarily and then do whatever with it when you finish the call.
WTC recognises telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and web addresses on the Braille display line. If such an item is clicked with th left mouse button by clicking on any of its characters, the store item dialogue box opens with the information box filled in with the clicked text. Braille users can perform this operation by pressing a "cursor routing button" on their Braille unit corresponding to a character in the item you require to store. Sighted users who have the editing window active can select the required item and copy it to the clipboard, then click the directory paste toolbar button to open the directory; at the location where you want to insert the item, click the toolbar button again to open the store item dialogue with the information box filled in with the text you put on the clipboard.
When you click an item on the Braille display line while you are in a telephone call, the store item dialogue opens with the cursor in the name box for you to enter a name for the item you are storing, which is shown in the information box. Because the information box is already filled in with the text you are storing, you only need to type a name before closing the dialogue to save. When you press ENTER to store, the dialogue closes as normal and you are returned immediately to the communications window to continue the call. The new item has been stored at th top of the directory. This automatic storage is intended to minimise interruption to your 'phonecall, when the store dialogue opens in this situation it has a "QuickStore" button that you can click instead of pressing ENTER, indicating that the entry will be automatically stored at the top of the directory rather than requiring the user to chose a location at this stage. once you have finished the call, you can reorganise your directory using the move commands described below. The quick store feature is provided purely as a convenience, if you would rather organise the new item there and then you can open the directory whilst online (context menu key), any incoming text while you are in the directory will be displayed as normal when you return to the communications window (Escape).
To move a quickly stored entry to its intended location:
When you press Control+X, the highlighted entry in your directory is removed (cut), as if you had deleted it. When you subsequently press Control+I at a new location, or Control+A to make a new entry at the end, the store item dialogue opens with the name and information boxes filled in as per the entry you have just cut. Edit the boxes if required, then press ENTER to store or click the Insert or Add button. If you press Control+L on a directory entry, the entry becomes available to be reentered at a new location as above, but the original is not deleted, providing a copy option rather than move.
Sometimes you want to replace an existing entry with new information, such as if somebody changes their e-mail address. To do this, instead of pressing Control+X to cut the quickly stored entry, Press Control+Shift+C. The entry disappears as above, but only the information part of the line (after the colon) is available for reentry. Go to the directory entry where you wish to store the new information, and press Control+M to modify it. The store item dialogue opens to edit the highlighted entry, but the contents of the information box has been changed to the quickly stored information instead of the original information. Pressing Control+C on a directory entry makes its information field available for restoring to another item but does not delete the original entry.
All of the above commands have toolbar buttons.
If you are not online when you click an item on the Braille display to store it, the directory opens rather than the store item dialogue. Find the location where you want to insert the new item and press Control+I, or press Control+A to store it at the end of the directory. When the store item dialogue opens, the information box is already filled in with the text that you clicked. You can also press Control+M to modify an existing directory entry; the store item dialogue will open for entry modification except that the original information field has been replaced by the new text that you require to store.
Whether you are in a call or not, once you have the store item dialogue open, the automatically filled-in information field is editable exactly as when manually storing or modifying an entry. You can make any required changes to the text before saving it. Note that telephone numbers are automatically formatted with hyphens replacing any spaces in the original number.
